Course Introduction

The Foundation Degree in Sport (Health & Fitness) will appeal to those who have an interest in sport, or would like the opportunity to develop and enhance their understanding of the health and fitness industry. If you are looking for a career in a dynamic and fast growing profession doing something you enjoy, this course is well worth considering.
This course is run in partnership with the University of Bath who are internationally recognised for their academic programmes in the field of sport. Weymouth College has excellent sporting facilities both on their main campus and at the nearby Redlands Community Sports Hub. It is a very exciting time for sport in general in Weymouth as Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour will be the venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing competitions for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Aims: 
The programme aims to provide students with a sound understanding of the key components of health and fitness, lifestyles and attitudes to exercise, promotion of healthy living, principles of fitness and training and industry specific management skills. Students will be offered the opportunity to gain additional professional qualifications (Central YMCA Qualifications - CYQ) which will qualify them to work as fitness instructors in the field.

Progression/Career Opportunities: 
The course aims to provide students with the skills required to progress or develop their career in health and fitness.
Students will develop their capability in, and knowledge of, health and fitness throughout the programme and a clear progression of understanding will be evident through the specific unit delivery. This will ensure a smooth transition from year to year whether students are qualified and experienced in the health and fitness industry, or are entering this field for the first time.
The programme will provide students with an opportunity to study, train and further develop their knowledge, skills and qualifications to a high standard.
Progression to a Full Degree: 
Students who achieve the necessary standard will be given the opportunity to progress to a one year BSc (Hons) Sport (Health & Fitness) top-up course at the University of Bath or a similar top-up degree at another university.
