Course Introduction

If you are looking for a career in Forensic Science or Laboratory Science then this course is for you.
This Foundation degree run in partnership with Bournemouth University prepares students for entry into the professional scientific arena by developing specialist technical, research and management skills. The course trains you in a range of scientific disciplines including crime scene investigation, medical laboratory science, and a variety of industry-related laboratory-based skills. The Foundation degree in Forensic Science will enable students to develop an understanding of how forensic evidence is identified, analysed, assessed and reported.
In the first year students will develop research skills in criminal law, forensic psychology and crime scene investigation as well as chemical and biological techniques. In the second year students will work on more advanced forensic laboratory techniques such as DNA fingerprinting and analysis of computer files.
Aims:
To equip students with the practical and theoretical skills underpinning Forensic and Laboratory Science. Aspects of criminal law, chemistry, biology, anatomy and forensic psychology will be taught in order to provide students with the knowledge necessary to enable them to participate in relevant careers.
Students will complete their own research project in their chosen area of specialisation. The course will be delivered by the use of lectures, laboratory work, discussion groups, practical demonstration and role playing activities.
