Course Introduction

Designed for those wishing to develop specialist skills in video production, whilst recognising the need for a flexible training in interactive digital multimedia.
This highly successful and well regarded Foundation degree is run in partnership with The Media School at Bournemouth University. Weymouth College Media Centre is well resourced for studio-based and location shooting. The facilities are fully equipped for digital interactive production from tapeless full HD acquisition to post production on Avid Media Composer, mastering to broadcast standards.
The first year of the course uses seminars and tutorials to develop media literacy skills whilst specialist skills are developed through a series of short productions. At the end of the first year students take part in a residential training exercise shooting 15-20 minute drama productions on location. A strong focus for the course is its links with the local community and the arts and in the second year students take on a locally commissioned production, liaising with the client and taking responsibility for the entire production.
The course provides training in camera, sound, lighting, direction, editing, production and script development. Working on a variety of productions including drama, documentary, music and experimental videos students gain a range of experience including interactive projects ranging from website design to Flash gaming. One of the fundamental elements of the Foundation Degree is a realistic preparation for a career in the media. To achieve this aim, students will undertake periods of work placement within the industry and produce digital media products for genuine external clients.
*Work-based Learning Students are required to complete a minimum of 30 days work experience within appropriate media organisations. Professional placements provide a practical context for consolidation of skills and techniques learnt, and offer opportunities for further research into production management and professional practice in production and post-production. There are also opportunities to work with teaching staff on a range of large external media projects.
