Course Introduction

The Access to Higher Education (A2HE) course helps you to gain university places to study for a range of vocational degrees. Weymouth College offers four different A2HE pathways: Combined Studies • Health & Social Care • Science • Forensic Science
An encouraging and friendly environment, created by staff and fellow mature students, means that we have a very good track record in helping adults get to university. We have an excellent range of facilities at the College including computer access, library facilities and guidance from academic staff. Plus, we offer you support and advice throughout the process of applying to university including preparation for interview.
If you are over 19 and wish to move onto Higher Education but either lack the normal/formal entry qualifications or feel the need to develop confidence and regain practice in study methods, then our Access to Higher Education (A2HE) course is for you. Our course is nationally validated through the Open College Network of the South West Region and is entered in the National Register of Access to HE courses, to which Higher Education establishments refer. For further information with learner success stories, news and events related to Access to Higher Education, please view the Open College Network South West Region website: http://www.ocnswr.org.uk/access-to-higher-education.
Progression/Career Opportunities:
The course is excellent preparation if you wish to follow a wide range of studies at university, especially if you are interested in a vocational degree. The successful completion of an A2HE programme is regarded as an acceptable form of matriculation (admission) by universities and colleges however, it is important to note that each university sets its own entry requirements so you will need to research these carefully.
You will be able to apply for Higher Education courses throughout the country or you could choose to study at Degree Centre Weymouth. Your application for Higher Education courses will be considered more seriously and more sympathetically as a result of your attendance on this course but places are not guaranteed.
The Higher Education Advisor at Weymouth College can assist in helping you research university options and potential career choices. We will give you every support and advice in gaining a place in higher education through the UCAS and other entry schemes.
Students who completed this course in 2010 have gained places on courses such as BSc (Hons) Midwifery, Child Nursing, Adult Nursing, Psychology, FdSc Forensic Science, at institutions such as Bournemouth University, Southampton University, Degree Centre Weymouth and UWE.

Meet the students

Luke Williams
This course has given me really good skills which I am going to need for university and it has made the transition from college to university a lot easier. Writing exams in university style has prepared me for what I will have to do once I reach Higher Education, and the course has given me a good base of knowledge in different subjects, as well as my chosen pathway which is science. I’ve applied to study Sport & Exercise Sciences, and I’ve got offers from my two top choices which are Bath and Exeter.
Sam Kirton
The course has been brilliant, I’ve been able to learn an array of different subjects, as well as refreshers in core subjects such as English, Maths and ICT – along with my chosen pathway which is science. The course is intense, and you learn a lot in a short space of time – it has enhanced my confidence and made me ready for university. I have had conditional offers from all of my chosen universities and my top choice is the University of Bangor in North Wales.
